Inductive Teaching Strategy

Inductive Teaching Strategy:
·         Was first designed to help students to organize a deep and through understanding of well-designed information. In this strategy teacher presents the student with an examples that illustrates the context and guide the student’s effort to find pattern in the information.
·         In this strategy we move from –known to unknown.
                                                             -Simple to complex idea.
                                                            -Concrete to Abstract.
·         Also known as guided discovery
  • Teacher’s role is to provide examples that illustrate the content and then guide students’ efforts to find patterns in the information
  • Learners construct their own understanding (with careful guidance and questioning by teachers)
Characteristics of Inductive teaching Strategy.
·         Highly sophisticated and demanding instruction
·         Teachers must be expert in questioning
·         Teachers must monitor behavior
·         Teachers must make on the spot decisions about what questions to ask and which students to call on
·         The students must be guided to analyze the information
·         Emphasizes critical, higher-order thinking
·         Increases student motivation
·         Learner involvement and success
·         Evokes curiosity and challenges students to find an “unknown”
·         Examples provide background information to accommodate individual differences
·         Creative model peaks student interest
Concepts of inductive teaching strategy:
1.      Open-ended phase.
2.      Convergent phase.
3.      Closure phase.
4.      Application phase.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Inductive teaching Strategy.
Merits of Inductive Method
By making use of this method, following merits get accrue to the students as well as to teacher:
a. As this is a scientific method, thus it helps to considerable extent in developing scientific outlook among the students.
b. This method helps to develop scientific attitude among the students.
c. With the help of this method, teacher can develop qualities of critical thinking and habit of keen observation among the students properly and accurately.
d. This is a very logical and psychological kind of teaching science.
e. By this method, students get various opportunities to play an active role in learning process.
Demerits of Inductive Method
This method has certain limitations, some of which are as follows:
a. The results or conclusions drawn from such method are not found to be final in case where the amount of data is very large in number.
b. All the topics of science cannot be dealt with this method properly.
c. This method can only be used when teacher have much time for teaching process.

Guided and unguided inductive teaching strategy.
  1. Guided
In this  teacher will provide some hint related to the topic but students have to do self discovery.
features of guided   inductive teaching strategy
  • learner have to explore.
  • teacher will just be a guide and provide the basic information.
  • whatever student do, teacher has to encourage.
 2     Unguided
In this teacher will only act as guide and all the work should be done by students themself(provide only the topic).
features of unguided   inductive teaching strategy
  • teacher will pose only the question.
  • student centered
